Facing the existing difficulty in defining an identity of Europe and of the European, but taking Europe as a passing route, this debate was initiated in the streets of Lisbon. Jammed with European visitors, the streets of this city, particularly rua Garrett and rua do Carmo, are representative of “Europe” as a passing route.

In this place, visitors were questioned about what it means to be European. The aim is not to expose the results as the correct and only answer to the question of the European identity, in part because answers were distinct and even contradictory. In this selection of 10 photographs, the results are presented as a few attempts to answer to a vast and abstract question.
